The gift of education has the power to transform lives. It creates opportunities, nurtures hope, and offers a pathway beyond poverty. In a world where life’s challenges can sometimes feel overwhelming, stories like this remind us that each of us has the power to make a meaningful difference in the life of another. Australian James Spence, founder of Freedom Through Education Nepal (FTEN), is a wonderful example of this. There is something profoundly beautiful about witnessing ordinary people doing extraordinary things—not for recognition, but simply because they care.

Driven by a deep sense of compassion and a belief that every child deserves the opportunity to learn, James established this grassroots charity to support some of Nepal’s most vulnerable children. Through quiet dedication and the generosity of supporters, children who may otherwise never have entered a classroom are now receiving an education and, with it, the opportunity to create a different future.
Education is so much more than reading, writing and mathematics. It nurtures confidence. It opens hearts and minds. It offers hope where hope may once have seemed out of reach. It plants seeds that can transform not only one life, but generations to come.
Many of the children supported by FTEN come from impoverished and marginalised communities in the Kathmandu Valley, including Indian immigrant Dalit families living in difficult circumstances. Although public education is available, the costs of school fees, uniforms, books and essential supplies place schooling beyond the reach of many families.
For these children, the simple opportunity to attend school can be life-changing.

One of the things I admire most about Freedom Through Education Nepal is its integrity. This is a 100% volunteer-run Australian charity. Every dollar donated goes directly to supporting children and families in Nepal because all administration and operational costs are covered by volunteers. It is a model built on trust, generosity and a genuine desire to serve.
I often reflect on how interconnected we all are. The choices we make each day ripple far beyond our own lives. A simple act of generosity offered from Australia can create hope for a child in Kathmandu. It can ease the burden carried by a family. It can nurture dreams that may one day benefit an entire community. That is the quiet power of kindness.
Sometimes we wonder whether our contribution is enough. The truth is, lasting change is rarely created through one grand gesture. More often, it grows from many small acts of compassion woven together by people who believe a better world is possible.
James Spence and the volunteers at Freedom Through Education Nepal embody this spirit. Their work reminds us that education is one of the greatest gifts we can offer a child. It is an investment not only in knowledge, but in dignity, self-belief and opportunity.
If this story speaks to your heart, perhaps you might consider becoming part of that ripple of kindness.
Together, we can help ensure that more children have the chance to learn, to grow and to discover the unique gifts they have come into this world to share.

Sometimes changing the world begins with changing the world for one child.
For around $300 AUD, you can sponsor a child for an entire year of public schooling. That sponsorship helps provide school fees, uniforms, books and stationery, tutoring, and emergency support when families need it most.
When we stop to think about it, $300 can disappear quickly in our own lives. Yet for a child in Nepal, that same amount can open the door to education, confidence, friendships and possibilities that may never have existed otherwise.
