How High Blood Sugar Affects Your Hearing

Diabetes is well known for its effects on the eyes, kidneys, and nerves. Less commonly known is the fact it can also impair your hearing. The more years of your life spent with high blood sugar, the more at risk you are of hearing loss.

A growing body of research shows that persistently high blood sugar can damage the delicate machinery inside the ear, and the medications used to manage related conditions may add to the risk.

Why Sugar and Sound Are More Connected Than They Seem

The inner ear runs on a remarkably small and specialised piece of anatomy called the cochlea. It’s a fluid-filled, spiral structure about the size of a pea. Inside it live thousands of sensory hair cells, which convert vibrations into the electrical signals your brain interprets as sound.

These cells are metabolically demanding and rely on a steady, well-regulated supply of blood and nutrients to stay alive. They do not regenerate once lost.

How High Blood Sugar Damages the Inner Ear

Blood supply comes from a network of extremely fine blood vessels, including a structure called the stria vascularis, which helps maintain the precise chemical environment the cochlea needs to function. This is where persistent, elevated blood sugar becomes a problem.

Chronically high blood sugar is known to alter both microvascular structures (the small vessels) and macrovascular structures (larger arteries) throughout the body. These are the same processes that contribute to diabetic retinopathy in the eyes and neuropathy in the extremities.

In the ear, this shows up as reduced blood flow and impaired nutrient delivery to the cochlea. Over time, the hair cells that depend on that supply begin to deteriorate. Because these cells don’t regrow, the resulting hearing loss is permanent, and progressive if the underlying blood sugar problem continues unchecked.
