As women we spend so much of our lives caring for others, meeting expectations and keeping everything moving. In the midst of it all, it can be easy to lose touch with the woman at the centre of it all — you.
We know how everyone else is doing. We know what the children need, what our partner needs, what our family expects and what needs to happen at work. We have appointments to make, meals to prepare, messages to answer, and problems to solve. We become incredibly skilled at holding everything together. And somewhere along the way, we can lose touch with ourselves. Not because we don’t care about our own wellbeing, but because something—or someone— always seems to need us first.
How often has someone asked, “How are you?” and you’ve automatically replied, “I’m fine”?
Perhaps you are fine. But perhaps you’re also tired, overwhelmed or feeling disconnected from the woman you once knew yourself to be — creative, adventurous, excited about life or simply more in touch with what brings you joy. Sometimes the signs are subtle. We stay constantly busy but strangely unfulfilled. We say yes when we really want to say no. We feel responsible for everyone else’s happiness while our own dreams and desires quietly wait in the background.
As we explored in Why You Don’t Put Yourself First – And How to Change It, putting yourself last can become such an ingrained pattern that you barely notice you’re doing it.
Caring for Others Is Beautiful — But You Matter Too
There is nothing wrong with caring deeply for the people we love. The problem comes when caring for everyone else leaves no room for caring for ourselves. Taking time for yourself isn’t selfish. It doesn’t mean abandoning your responsibilities or loving your family and friends any less. Sometimes, creating space for yourself is one of the most important things you can do. When life is constantly moving, it can become difficult to hear your own inner voice. We need moments to pause and ask:
What do I need now? What am I ready to let go of? What do I want for myself? And what might be possible if I allowed myself to make different choices?
Sometimes, clarity doesn’t come from trying harder. It comes when we give ourselves enough space to stop and listen. Creating moments of stillness can also help us step out of the constant rush of daily life. You can explore this further in our article on resetting before your rush, or discover some simple tips for grounding your energy.
The Gift of Taking Time Out

Imagine stepping away from the demands of everyday life for just one day. No rushing from one responsibility to another. No constant notifications. No one asking what needs to be done next. Instead, imagine being beside the ocean, surrounded by nature and sharing the day with a small group of women who have also chosen to pause.
A day to breathe, reflect and reconnect. A day to become curious about yourself again. What patterns have you been carrying? What expectations may no longer fit? What have your relationships been showing you? And perhaps most importantly, who are you underneath all the roles you carry? The mother. The partner. The daughter. The friend. The professional. The carer. The organiser.
Reconnecting with yourself means remembering that you are more than what you do for everyone else. It means making space for your intuition, creativity, dreams and the possibilities that may still be waiting for you. And there is something powerful about doing this alongside other women.
When we gather in a supportive environment, we often realise we are not the only ones who feel this way. We recognise ourselves in one another’s stories. We laugh, reflect, share and sometimes discover that simply being heard and understood can be deeply restorative.
What If You Could Make New Choices?

You don’t need to have your whole life figured out. You don’t need a five-year plan or even a problem that needs solving. Sometimes all that is needed is a willingness to become curious. Curious about what you might want now. Curious about what may be ready to change. Curious about possibilities you may not yet have considered.
Because sometimes a small pause can create a surprisingly meaningful shift — a new perspective, a boundary, a different conversation, a decision or perhaps the return of a dream you had almost forgotten. Or simply the realisation: “I matter too.”
This is the intention behind the co-creation of Women’s Retreats- To Pause Reflect and Reconnect A collaboration between Debbie Paull, Jacquie Walker and Patricia Hamilton, this intimate day retreat is an invitation to step away from the everyday and create intentional space for yourself.
