The stories we tell ourselves shape our lives and become our beliefs that become our truths.

As a child, I internalised many stories that bound me in fear and left me feeling disconnected from myself and the wider world. As part of growing into myself today, I found that with effort, I could reshape my stories by reframing my self-talk and create new truths to live from my authentic truth.

When envisioning my offering for our recent Equinox Bali Retreat that we hosted in March, I wrote this poem, which I used to create this song using an online app called Mureka. I have a series of songs that I created, and I will share one each week.

Stories We Tell
We are living in a book of stories
The stories that we tell ourselves
That define who we are
Who we believe we are
Some are true and some are false
Some are borrowed from another
Some are dreams and imaginings
Some are lies we’ve come to trust
Some were spoken by others
To make us bend to their will

Images, – Control, – Self-talk all collide
Stories become beliefs,
Beliefs become our truths
The story that we carry
Becomes the life we choose
Our mind loves a good story
And retells and replays it
Over and over again
As the belief of self
And the story we tell ourselves
melds into one

Some stories lift us
And move us into action
Some stories protected
The child we once were
Some stories are kept secrets
Never to be told
When the world felt frightening
And we searched for understanding
Many of the truths we believed
Were really misunderstandings

Becomes the life we choose
Our mind loves a good story
And retells and replays it
Over and over again
As the belief of self
And the story we tell ourselves
melds into one

Shaping
Shifting
Questioning
What are the lies I accepted as truth?
How have the stories of yesterday shaped me today?
Sifting through the stories
The conspiracy of lies
Self-editing in this moment
letting go what no longer feels true

Stories become beliefs,
Beliefs become our truth
The stories that we tell ourselves
Become the life we choose
Stories become beliefs
Beliefs become our truth
The story we are telling now
Creates the life we live

I make the choice
To become the author of my story
I am rewriting the stories now
Gently loosening the grip
On what no longer fits
Who I am becoming
New stories unfolding
Effortlessly replacing the old
Where balance and harmony live
And new beliefs emerge
