What are Telomeres?
Telomeres are the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes, composed of repetitive DNA sequences and specialized proteins. They safeguard the chromosome ends from degradation and fusion, and play a crucial role in cell division and aging. Telomeres shorten with each cell division, and when they become critically short, cells either stop dividing or die. |
